Can dogs eat sardines in spring water?

Sardines in spring water are the cleanest sardine option you can buy for your dog. Spring water is plain, additive-free, and adds nothing to the tin except packaging fluid. When you drain the tin, you're left with whole sardines containing their natural omega-3 oils, soft edible bones (a complete calcium source), and high-quality protein.
The nutritional profile is hard to beat for a treat: a typical 100g tin contains around 24g protein, 11g fat (mostly omega-3 EPA and DHA), and 400mg of bioavailable calcium. The vitamin D content (around 5μg per tin) is genuinely useful for dogs that aren't on complete commercial food.
Most UK supermarket brands of sardines in spring water are interchangeable. Look for ones that list only "sardines, spring water, salt" on the ingredients. Some brands sneak in citric acid or preservatives — these are not harmful but unnecessary.
How much: roughly one sardine per 5kg of body weight, two to three times a week. A 25kg Labrador can have a half tin, twice a week. Don't make it daily — the omega-3 content is high enough that excessive amounts can have mild blood-thinning effects.
