Can dogs eat marmite?
The full picture
Marmite (and Vegemite, Bovril, and similar yeast extracts) is ridiculously salty — beyond what any dog should consume. It often also contains onion or garlic extract. Even a small smear on a plate is more sodium than a small dog should have in a day. Marmite toast or a dog licking a Marmite knife are all worse than most people realise.
If your dog has already eaten marmite
Marmite is very high in salt. If your dog has eaten more than a tiny amount, watch for excessive thirst and signs of salt toxicity. Call your vet if symptoms develop.
Risks to watch for
- Salt poisoning
- Onion/garlic toxicity
- Excessive thirst
- Kidney strain
Safe portion size
None.
Safer alternatives
- Plain cooked meat
