Can dogs eat chips (fries)?
The full picture
Chip-shop chips, oven chips, McDonald's fries — all similar story. Not directly toxic, but loaded with oil and salt dogs handle poorly. A stolen chip isn't emergency material, but routinely sharing means giving large amounts of fat and sodium — a recipe for pancreatitis and obesity. Plain baked potato wedges without oil or salt are a much better substitute if your dog loves the texture.
If your dog ate more than a safe amount
If your dog has eaten a few plain chips (crisps/fries), watch for digestive upset from the salt and fat. Large quantities cause salt toxicity risk. Call your vet if vomiting, lethargy or unusual thirst develops.
Risks to watch for
- Pancreatitis from fat
- Sodium toxicity in large amounts
- Obesity
- Ketchup often contains onion/garlic
Safe portion size
An occasional stolen chip isn't an emergency.
Safer alternatives
- Plain baked potato wedges
- Sweet potato pieces
- Carrot sticks
While you're checking what your dog can safely eat, make sure their flea and worm protection is up to date too.
